The IPWireless UMTS TDD Network

A Flexible, Low Cost Wireless Broadband Radio Network

The IPWireless network consists of multiple base stations (termed "Node B’s") controlled by the Integrated Network Controller (INC).

  • Typical "macrocell" site consists of three Node B radios and a single INC in a 3-sector configuration, communicating with up to several thousand 3G Broadband Modems on the UMTS TDD air interface.
  • Node B’s can also be deployed in microcell and supercell architectures, according to operator requirements.
  • The IPWireless network equipment interfaces with standard omni or sectorized cellular antennas (no expensive smart antennas required) and standard IP or UMTS core network infrastructure.
  • The network is incredibly spectrally efficient and allows an operator to deploy an entire market with as little as 5 or 10 MHz of licensed spectrum.

Element Manager Software

Key Features:
  • The IPWireless Element Manager Software (EMS), an integral part of the overall solution, allows the operator to configure, control, and manage their IPWireless network
  • The operator can configure, monitor and manage the INC, Node Bs, system alarms, service levels, air interface, and more from the EMS software
  • The EMS software client is Java based, allowing an operator to manage the network from practically any PC equipped with Microsoft Internet Explorer ®, even remotely. The software uses SNMP to communicate with the INC and Node B's

Integrated Network Controller

IPWireless INC The Integrated Network Controller (INC) is a small, low-cost, rack mountable unit, that integrates the functions of the UMTS Radio Network Controller, GPRS packet data node, and other higher level functions. It provides a Layer 3 TCP/IP connection to the Internet or private data network. The INC currently supports up to 12 Node Bs (or 6 at full bandwidth and capacity), and can be collocated with the Node B equipment at a base station site, or housed at a central location supporting multiple base station sites.

Key Features:
  • Standard Internet protocols on the gateway network side allow connectivity to a network of multiple INC’s to be provided by an IP outer, ATM switch or other similar equipment
  • All supporting systems (including the Element Manager and other management systems), as well as the Home Location Register, communicate with the access network elements using standard IP protocols, allowing flexibility in the location and network connectivity of these systems
  • For existing UMTS operators, an alternate architecture integrates with a common UMTS/GPRS core network
  • The INC uses a fault tolerant operating system, and is configured using a Compact PCI rack (19", 4 RU high) with NEBS compliance. Interface standards supported include T3, E1, E3 and 100Base-T
