IPWireless Ships New UMTS TDD VoIP Solution Enabling Carrier-Grade Mobile and Residential Voice Services

San Bruno, CA, October 19, 2004 - IPWireless announced today the commercial release of its latest UMTS TDD network software, which includes a feature that allows operators to immediately offer carrier-grade fixed-line replacement voice over IP (VoIP) capabilities in addition to existing broadband and other packet based services on their converged network. The software also supports mobile VoIP telephony, which will allow operators to offer mobile voice and data services upon mobile handsets availability early next year.

The new VoIP feature supports voice using dedicated channels on the air interface while still using shared channels on the same carrier for other packet-based applications, so operators do not have to sacrifice the quality associated with circuit switched voice to realize the economic and data-performance benefits of packet-based networks. Several residential SIP-based VoIP devices for UMTS TDD are available from manufacturers UTStarcom and Dovado, allowing UMTS TDD operators to tap an immediate additional revenue stream -- residential voice line replacement. The new software has already been shipped to multiple operators who expect to offer a VoIP service that can replace fixed lines by the end of the year.

Dedicated channels minimizes latency and jitter to provide the same quality as circuit switched voice, and goes beyond simple prioritization to pre-allocate voice into channels. The IPWireless system allows the operator to set the maximum proportion of system capacity used for voice reserving the remainder of capacity for shared channels and packet-based applications. In addition to dedicated channels, UMTS TDD VoIP architecture includes a SIP-based Service Provider Network, end-to-end quality of service (QoS), and supports multiple devices, such as handsets, PDAs, laptops, etc, on the same architecture.

"Responding to requests from mobile operators worldwide, IPWireless is pleased to announce the commercial availability of state-of-the-art VoIP capabilities," said Chris Gilbert, chief executive officer, IPWireless. "Operators can deploy UMTS TDD networks not only to achieve the highest capacity, fastest mobile broadband platform commercially available in the world today, but also to offer carrier-grade voice -- all over a single, highly economic network."

UMTS TDD, a global standard that can be used by operators and manufacturers worldwide, has emerged as the leading standard for mobile broadband, with commercial deployments in several countries around the world including Australia, Germany, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The commercially proven Mobile Broadband system includes a complete network infrastructure, pocket-sized wireless desktop modems, and PC cards (PCMCIA) for laptops and PDAs. In addition, major equipment makers are developing a variety of network management and end user devices, including mobile voice over IP handsets and Compact Flash Cards, with IPWireless-licensed UMTS TDD chipsets embedded.
