AKSORAN Selects Axcera To Deploy IPWireless UMTS TDD-based Broadband Wireless Network in Kazakhstan
'Escape Wireless' Launches in Almaty; Astana, Several Other Cities to Follow
Almaty, Kazakhstan, September 14, 2004 - Convergence in information technology, telecommunications, and consumer electronics has led to increasing demand for ubiquitous connectivity. To meet this demand, AKSORAN Ltd. has launched Escape Wireless, a non-line-of-sight broadband wireless technology that will change the way businesses and enterprises in Almaty, Astana, and several other cities across Republic of Kazakhstan access the Internet.
Escape Wireless combines the speed of DSL with the convenience of cellular to allow users to connect to the Internet at broadband speeds anywhere they are in the coverage area -- at home, at work, in a park or café, even while moving at vehicular speeds -- all without wires.
The network covers the territory of Almaty (population 1.8 million people). The company plans to broaden the network to the capital of the Kazakhstan, Astana (population 510,300), as well as several other cities throughout the country. Currently Escape Wireless is serving enterprises that require full mobility, always-on connectivity and reliable service. In addition, AKSORAN soon plans to offer "in-box" service for the retail sector.
AKSORAN has selected technology partner Axcera to deploy the Escape Wireless network. Axcera is using its Axity3G wireless broadband system which is based on UMTS TDD mobile broadband technology from IPWireless, a technology that is commercially proven, and based on the 3G standards designed for the high-speed transmission of data.
AKSORAN joins the growing list of both GSM and new operators that are deploying UMTS TDD globally. The only global standard that can be used by operators and manufacturers worldwide to offer these types of services today, UMTS TDD has emerged as the leading standard for mobile broadband, with deployments in several countries around the world including Australia, Germany, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In addition, major equipment makers are developing a variety of network management and end user devices, including mobile voice over IP handsets and Compact Flash cards, with IPWireless-licensed UMTS TDD chipsets embedded.
