IPWireless and UP Tech Form Partnership For Device Development and Distribution of Mobile Broadband Technologies to Operators in China
IPWireless and Beijing-based UP Tech to work together to provide Mobile Broadband solutions for China
New UP Tech-developed subscriber devices create additional revenue opportunities for IPWireless operators
SAN BRUNO, CA - September 8, 2003 - IPWireless announced today that is has entered into a development and distribution partnership with UP Tech, a communications equipment and solutions provider in China. As part of the alliance, UP Tech is developing new subscriber devices for the IPWireless Mobile Broadband system. The companies are also working together to introduce Mobile Broadband technologies to operators in mainland China, and have already launched a trial with one major operator in China.
"We are at the beginning of a new era in China -- a time of convergence where next generation networks are creating a new level of freedom for communication," said Chareleson Zheng, chief executive officer, UP Tech. "We are excited to bring the benefits of IPWireless' unmatched mobile broadband technology to operators and bring individuals unparalleled freedom."
IPWireless' Mobile Broadband System will allow operators in China to offer residential and enterprise customers an instantaneous, "plug-and-play" Internet connection that is affordable, reliable, and cost-effective. Mobile Broadband provides data speeds as fast or faster than fixed-wire options like DSL and cable modem, but unlike these fixed options, the IPWireless solution offers full mobility.
Like popular Wi-Fi applications but without the coverage limitations of "hotspots," IPWireless-powered networks give users real-time, secure access to data wherever they are in the coverage area, whether in fixed, portable, or mobile settings.
New Devices
As part of the companies' alliance, UP Tech is developing two new subscriber devices incorporating IPWireless technology that will help IPWireless operators offer additional services and generate additional revenue streams. The Integrated 802.11 Access Point allows customers to create broadband-powered, instantly deployable wireless local area networks, whether in a fixed, portable, or mobile setting. The device allows operators to extend their coverage by linking to popular WiFi-enabled devices such as laptops and PDAs.
Leveraging the low latency and QoS capabilities of IPWireless' Mobile Broadband System, the Integrated VoIP Gateway allows operators to provide carrier-class voice services to both consumers and enterprises. With this VoIP platform, customers can get telephony and broadband services from one provider.
"We are extremely pleased to be working with UP Tech, whose mission of enabling next generation telecommunications complements our objectives of bringing Mobile Broadband technology to China, one of the mostly closely watched markets in the world today, and creating Mobile Broadband devices that can be used by operators globally," said Chris Gilbert, chief executive officer, IPWireless. "With this development partnership with UP Tech, IPWireless has an increasing number of manufacturers building devices that incorporate our Mobile Broadband technology. These provide operators with more ways to bring ubiquitous broadband to their customers."
The IPWireless Mobile Broadband system is based on the UMTS UMTS TDD standard, a non-proprietary global standard that can be used by operators and manufacturers worldwide. The commercially proven Mobile Broadband system includes a complete network infrastructure, pocket-sized wireless desktop modems, and PC cards (PCMCIA) for laptops and PDAs. The IPWireless solution maximizes non-line-of-sight coverage and, because no truck rolls or smart antennas are required, is economically attractive and offers an unmatched ease of deployment.
