Woosh continues its network expansion
Auckland, New Zealand - April 14, 2005 - Woosh Wireless today announced it has ordered an additional 180 UMTS TDD base stations from its United States technology partner IPWireless.
Woosh Chief Executive Bob Smith says the additional base stations will be used to further consolidate its network in Auckland and extend the company's network in other centres around New Zealand.
The order is part of the company's continued investment in network development in New Zealand, says Mr Smith.
He says Woosh is continuing to capture a significant share of new broadband customers in its area of network coverage and the company has now passed the 10,000 customer mark.
"Customer response to our UMTS TDD-powered portable broadband network has been extremely positive," he says.
"Customer surveys continue to show high levels of customer satisfaction. Our expansion plans ensure that we will be able to continue to achieve the levels of success enjoyed to date while we bring additional services to new and existing markets."
Chris Gilbert, chief executive officer, IPWireless, says that in 2003 Woosh became the first company in the world to deploy a major commercial UMTS TDD network and it continues to be a leader in mobile broadband services industry.
"Woosh continues to be one of the foremost leaders in mobile broadband globally, and their success is attracting the interest of operators around the world who understand that the opportunity for mobile broadband services exists today.
"Already commercially deployed and used by tens of thousands subscribers in several countries around the world, including Australia, Germany, Lithuania, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Portugal, South Africa, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States, TD-CDMA has emerged as a leading standard globally for mobile broadband.
Bob Smith says the new base stations will be deployed in both existing coverage areas to support customer growth and for network expansion, the most recent development in this process being the launch of three new sites in Christchurch this week.
