A Wide-Area Wireless Broadband Connection: Telefonica and Airdata Provide the Last Mile Using Radio-DSL

"PortableDSL" offers comparable performances to fixed DSL products, but with the wide range of cellular technology allows for portable Internet access for many individuals in an increasing number of locations, including within the city limits of Stuttgart.

Munich, Germany - March 25, 2004 - The German IP carrier Telefonica and last mile Internet access carrier Airdata have jointly announced the introduction of a "PortableDSL" service. "PortableDSL," like a fixed DSL connection, makes it possible to download emails, complete fast research on the Internet, send photos, and stream videos at broadband speeds. To date, this new and innovative Internet access technology is wirelessly bridging the last mile and is available to private users, self-employed individuals, and organizations in the Stuttgart area.

With high-speed data rates of up to 768/128 Kbps, the "PortableDSL" service, makes it possible for all who live and work in Stuttgart to enjoy a fast, mobile broadband connection to the Internet that is comparable to performances typically seen by fixed DSL product offerings. The Telefonica- Airdata partnership now makes it possible to use the Internet wirelessly from almost any location within Stuttgart. In addition, since even VoIP will be possible through this type of connection, there now exists an alternative to fixed line connections. Security features include encryption at the radio interface with a 64- to 128-Bit widened encryption key and a USIM-card, thus the 3G security standard network offers a solid solution and provides the highest standard of security.

"In the near future we would like to see this partnership allow individuals to wirelessly use the Internet not only in a particular city but also nationwide," said Thomas Dunn, Vice President Marketing & Sales of Telefonica regarding the cooperation with Airdata.
