Portability Pays: Winning the Majority of New Broadband Subscribers
New Zealand
Woosh, the first operator globally to announce national deployment of UMTS TD-CDMA technology, launched commercial
services in September 2003. Woosh offers subscribers a broadband connection that is portable, meaning individuals using a small desktop modem or PCMCIA card from IPWireless can enjoy DSL-type speeds any where they are in the coverage area – at home, at work, and everywhere in between. The service has been so successful that about 40 percent of all new broadband subscribers in coverage are choosing Woosh over Telecom New Zealand’s DSL offer. Woosh was founded in 1999 as Walker Wireless and is backed by leading New Zealand Investors Todd Capital, Craig Heatley, and Stephen Tindall, and Clarity Partners (US).
Coverage:
Woosh is deploying a national network, and has now launched services in Auckland, Invercargil, and the capital city Wellington. Woosh is also expected to launch in Christchurch in July of 2004. By year-end 2005, Woosh will cover more than 40 percent of the New Zealand population.
Spectrum:
29 MHz of national frequencies in 2053-2082 MHz and 2150-2180 MHz bands.
