The First Network in Europe Deployed in UMTS TD-CDMA Unpaired SpectrumPortugal
Recently Clix, the leading Portuguese ISP, announced that it had suspended sales of ADSL to any new customers because of the incumbent’s lock on DSL services. While fighting for regulatory action to level the DSL playing field, the company decided it could better compete by launching a broadband service that is as fast or faster than DSL, but offers the added benefit of full mobility. With a UMTS TD-CDMA-based network from IPWireless deployed over the WCDMA infrastructure of its sister company, mobile operator Optimus, Clix launched a market trial in Lisbon that gives subscribers a high-speed Internet access service that will work from home, work, or on the road, all without wires. This joint effort marks the first announced 3G network in Europe that utilizes the unpaired IMT 2000 spectrum that is specifically allocated for UMTS TD-CDMA
technology. Eventually, it is envisioned that Clix, Optimus, as well as Novis, parent company Sonaecom’s fixed line operator, would utilize the UMTS TD-CDMA platform to offer a range of innovative portable, mobile, and fixed data and voice services for consumer and business customers.
