Integrated Mobile Broadcast (IMB) is a 3GPP Release 8 standard which enables spectrally-efficient delivery of MBMS services in the 3G TDD bands in a way that is integrated with existing 3G FDD unicast technology. Key benefits include:
- avoidance of congestion on existing unicast 3G data networks
- enabling of innovative, high-bandwidth dataservices
- improved user experience of existing broadcast applications and services
- lower cost of delivery of content to mobile devices
In September 2009, the GSMA publicly endorsed IMB as a new 3GPP standard and published the whitepaper Integrated Mobile Broadcast (IMB) Service Scenarios and System Requirements for the mobile industry. The GSMA has only endorsed a handful of technologies, including HSPA and WCDMA, speaking to the significant potential IMB offers the mobile industry.
