3G Networks Evolve to Meet the Growing Demand for Broadcast Services

There are 3 main trends which are driving the need for IMB:

  1. The rapid growth in mobile data volumes - largely being driven by video and multimedia traffic
  2. The constrained growth in 3G unicast network capacity and
  3. The high proportion of data traffic files that are accessed on a limited number of websites. For example, research shows that mobile YouTube viewing rose 1700% in the first half of 2009, but only 3% of YouTube videos are viewed over 25,000 times and generate the majority of YouTube traffic.

These three converging trends have created the need for IMB, a new mobile broadcast technology standard that will support broadcast quality content and predictive viewing habits while alleviating existing capacity constraints – all at a very low cost. IMB enables spectrally-efficient delivery of data broadcast services in the 3G TDD bands in a way that is integrated with existing 3G FDD unicast technology. IMB supports live broadcast mobile TV services, video clip casting, software updates, data broadcast, music, and more and can be implemented in TDD spectrum, currently owned, but unused by many operators as a part of their 3G licenses.

The 3G Mobile Broadcast Evolution for UMTS Operators

IPWireless' 3GPP-based IMB solution enables mobile network operators and device vendors to maximise their 3G network investment and deliver mobile broadcast services at approximately one-tenth the price of alternative  solutions, provides the broadcast-quality performance that users demand, and allows mobile network operators to stay in control of the value-chain.
