In October 2006, 3UK, Orange, Telefónica, and Vodafone conducted a 4-month technical trial of IPWireless Release 7 Broadcast Solution, TDtv. TDtv, the predecessor to IMB, was based on the UMTS TD-CDMA-3GPP Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Services (MBMS) standard. The trial was conducted over 4 months, and included a network of 12 base stations deployed on 12 cell sites across Bristol, UK. The cell sites were chosen to demonstrate coverage across multiple environments including dense urban, urban, suburban, rural and motorway.
The trial provided valuable insights into the technology's capability and successfully demonstrated how existing 3G TDD spectrum can be used to deliver mobile television and other multimedia services.
• Technology met or exceeded all requirements set by operators
• Proven to deliver up to 14 channels at ~300kbps+ in 5MHz / 28 channels in 10MH
• Exceptional coverage capabilities-providing the same indoor/outdoor coverage as WCDMA when deployed on 35% of the sites
• Can be implemented in WCDMA handsets with no coexistence issues
• Works for very high speed mobility...even at motorway speeds
• Fast channel change times between 1.5 and 2 seconds
• 99.999%+ network reliability and availability
